Loft Conversions

Loft Conversions can add a substantial value of your property with little disruption to your living space. Urban Building Contractors Ltd can work closely with your budget to ensure you maximise the available space while maintaining the best energy efficiency possible.

There are a few factors to consider such as the structure of your roof, the floor level, and the available headspace. Typically, If you’ve got a minimum of 2.2m of headroom, then your property is likely to be suitable.

Types of Loft Conversions

There are four main types of loft conversions: dormer, roof light, mansard and hip-to-gable. The design that’s right for your home will depend on your budget and the layout of your loft space.

Roof light Loft Conversions

Roof light conversions are the most cost-effective and least disruptive option, as you won’t have to make any changes to the shape or pitch of your existing roof. Instead, it’s simply a case of adding skylight windows, installing a suitable floor, and adding a staircase for access. However, this will require that you have enough roof space already without having to add an extension.

Dormer Loft Conversions

A dormer loft conversion is an adaption to your home that extends outwards from the slope of your roof. Dormers are suitable for most homes with sloping roofs, they are typically less expensive than mansard or hip-to-gable conversions, but will still add a good amount of extra headroom and floor space to your property.

Hip-to-Gable Loft Conversions

Hip-to-gable loft conversions are achieved by extending the sloping ‘hip’ roof at the side of your property outwards to form a vertical ‘gable’ wall. This type of conversion will only be suitable on detached or semi-detached houses, as it requires a free sloping side roof.  If you have a detached property with a sloping roof on both sides, you can build our on both sides, this is called a double hip-to-gable extension.

Mansard Loft Conversions

A Mansard Loft extensions run along the entire length of your roof and will alter the angle of the slope, making it almost vertical. These are typically the most expensive type of loft conversion and will provide the most significant amount of extra space. Mansard conversions are suitable for most types of houses types, including terraced, semi-detached homes.
